Nearly 30 years ago I uttered the phrase "Did you know Alucard spelled backwards is Dracula?" to some random co-worker just wanting to see what sort of reaction it would garner. Little did I know it would be one of the most important moments of my life. This one is just for us.
With just a few days left things are starting to get a little hairy over here.
And of course the original. The one that started it all and the very first horror movie I considered a favorite. Of the big three The Wolfman, Dracula, and Frankenstein I always identified with this classic horror monster the most and still do.
I've read a decent amount of Lovecraft. I have mixed feelings about most of it. Movies based on his work seldom work for me either. Re-Animator (originally written in 1922 and titled Herbert West—Reanimator) is the exception. This will probably be the best "disembodied head sucks on a screaming naked womans nipple" video you see all Halloween season, oh hell, it's the best you will see all year. I'm that damn sure!
One of the creepiest lookin' dudes I've ever seen:
In my opinion, the 1978 remake of The Invasion of the Body Snatchers is the best version. There's nothing wrong with the original from 1956 I just prefer this version. Here's just one reason I like it so much:
At many points in my timeline I managed to see The Rocky Horror Picture Show quite a few times. Certainly too many times to remember. The very first time I saw one of the best audience participation movies (probably just about ALL the times I have seen it) Rickster Rick was right by my side.
Not knowing what to expect we went in and of course sat in the back row. A few minutes after that I realized I wouldn't be able to see the movie very well because I left my glasses in the car. At the time I only needed glasses to drive and for VERY distant viewing which included seeing movies. We decided to move closer to the front so we now were approximately in the middle of the theater.
With about five minutes to go before the start of the show two young ladies entered the theater and sat in the back row. They were almost in the very seats we had occupied a few minutes prior. The "actors" (RHPS faithful will know what I mean) noticed them and for a minute or two they verbally assaulted the "virgins" (again, you either KNOW what I mean or you don't) until the beginning credits began. With a big sigh of relief we watched the opening moments of what I could call another life changing experience.
If you've never seen it I seriously suggest you try to find out where it still plays. Of course you could always come over to my house and see a private viewing and get your cherry popper good and proper. If You Dare!
It's a Friday in the middle of October and although it's not the 13th we still got a visit from one of the most iconic horror movie killers of all time, Jason Voorhees. Growing up in Voorhees Township Jason always had a special in my heart.
How about a montage in tribute to all of Jason's victims:
And although not in total agreement among all 13er's, here is one fans list of best kills:
Today is my Queen of Halloween Denise's birthday and while we are here in Salem having a spooktacular time I wanted to post a song or two specifically for her special day.
Here's another one of those situations where the sequel is better than the original, at least that's how I feel. I know Night of the Living Dead is the one that started it all but I prefer Dawn of the Dead.
The song is The Season Of The Witch by Donovan. The movie is called Haxan a 1922 Danish silent horror movie.
Tomorrow morning I will be
heading to Salem Massachusetts with the beautiful and talented Denise. I
haven't been there since the late 90's and she has never been so with
any luck I will be posting some special additional stuff directly from
Witch Central. Don't panic that the blog will be on auto-pilot it will be well taken care of and I have made preparations for just such an occasion. Stay tuned!
First horror movie I saw in a movie theater. 7 years old.
A few months later I got this 45 RPM record just in time for Halloween.
In the winter of 2007, when we still lived in our apartment, Denise and I found ourselves snowed in for more than a day. This was one of those surprise storms that got bigger than the weather people thought it would. We had exhausted everything we could think of watching on TV and one evening we read the on screen description of a "B" horror movie that was coming on Showtime or maybe it was Cinemax. We didn't have great expectations turns out we were pleasantly surprised with this horror/comedy. So much so it has become one of my current day favorites.
The original movie from 1958 had some great scenes and one of the creepiest scenes of all time in horror movie history. Of course I mean the "Help Me!" scene. The 1986 remake of The Fly was creepy all the way through.
And I'll throw this in there also for good measure:
One of the best twist horror movie endings ever was 1996's Scream which lead to three more sequels. Scream 2 is arguably one of those rare examples of a sequel being better than the original. I would have to watch them back to back to give my official opinion. All of the installments of the franchise are decent and above average but the last two don't quite measure up to the first two with 4 certainly being better than 3. Here is the first surprise killer reveal of Scream which changed the "slasher killer" genre for the better.
Here is a new creepy story I just recently heard for the first time. Old scary stories are great to listen to but occasionally a new one, like "The Theater", comes along and keeps the genre alive.
Speaking of creepy happenings in a theater:
Surprisingly even to me, zombies appear on my list of top horror films more than expected. Here's another one of my favorite zombie movies:
The SAW franchise of horror movies has some of the goriest, scariest, and biggest gross-out scenes ever seen in movies which is one of the reasons I am a big fan. Here's one of my favorite "games".
If Bruce Campbell is in it chances are it's going to be a great viewing experience (except for that steaming turd of a show Burn Notice that ran on the USA network for I don't know how many years) and that it's going to have some great quotes in it. Here are some of his best:
Welcome to October and to BLOG Cerpts first Halloween celebration. Seeing as how Halloween is our favorite holiday and October is the best month of the year; things should be getting pretty creepy around here in no time. Creepy in a good way we hope. We a pleased to be kicking the month long celebration off with a song and a story.
